Non-Abrasive Dry Ice Blasting

Dry Ice Blasting (Non-Abrasive Surface Cleaning)

Dry ice blasting is also known as ice blasting or dry ice cleaning. This cleaning method is similar to sand blasting where a medium is accelerated in a pressurized air stream to impact a surface to be cleaned. Dry ice cleaning uses soft dry ice as a medium. This soft dry ice is accelerated to supersonic speeds. When the dry ice hits the surface to be cleaned, “mini-explosions” result as the dry ice turns to carbon dioxide gas. These explosions cause the undesirable contaminants to be lifted off the underlying substrate.

Unlike sandblasting or water jetting, the dry ice cleaning process is non-abrasive, non-corrosive, non-conductive, and non-toxic. The soft dry ice cleaning media disappears upon impact without damaging sensitive surfaces. Equipment can be used during or immediately after cleaning without the need for parts disassembly, rinsing, or drying. This means less downtime and results in increased production quantity per machine.

The dry ice cleaning technology is a food-grade process and is actually shown to be able to disinfect cleaned surfaces. Dry ice used as a cleaning medium can eliminate the added cost of secondary waste treatment.

Compressed air supply is needed in non-abrasive dry ice blasting. If compressed air supply is not available on site, mobile diesel-powered air compressors can be deployed for the client’s usage and rental at job site.
